Philippine Idol: Pilot Episode, July 30 (Part VI)

I went to see Sukob with my wife and kid, but I have to rush home to catch the pilot episode of the hit reality show Idol, now in the Philippines over at ABC 5.

I am particularly thrilled with this show because it is a hit anywhere it is launched. In fact, the American version dominates its time slot and all other shows in US primetime television. This is the biggest reality show on Earth!

When I arrived home, the show has already started. But this did not deter me with my mission to capture every moment during the auditions, and the way they presented the wannabes to the televiewers. I was not disappointed, as a matter of fact. I even enjoyed the show to the point that my wife asked me what is going on because I keep on laughing, and giggling.

On entertainment value, Philippine Idol is interesting. Although the audition process is similar to those used by other reality singing contests, the presentation made to the televiewers for the audition process is rather unique. The people behind the show actually picked the stories behind the wannabes, which made the process interesting and show more engaging. The choices of wannabes highlighted are also interesting. I was expecting the likes of William Hung of the famed American Idol to grace auditions, and lo and behold, hindi lang isa ang sumipot, marami-rami rin!

The combination of the three judges, Mr. Ryan Cayabyab, Ms. Pilita Corrales and Mr. Francis Magalona, is a combo made in heaven. I know the three have undergone some workshops amongst them, and it is understandable that their rapport is terrific. I love the reactions of the three whenever a wannabe performs rather disappointingly. But I love Pilita's facial expressions more and Francis' eye expressions (kahit hindi ko nakikita dahil palaging naka-shades).

As a whole, the show is refreshing. Even if marami na ang naunang ganitong show sa Philippine Television, I have to admit that Philippine Idol is different because the brand is already there.
