Matt Evans as Pedro Penduko
ABS-CBN has announced in a presscon that PBB Teens standout Matt Evans has been chosen to play the lead in what they describe as "the most lavish production of Komiks to date": Komiks Presents: Da Adventures of Pedro Penduko.
He will be joined in this multi-part series by a spectacular cast, led by Gloria Romero, Bembol Roco, TJ Trinidad, Kitkat and Deejay Durano, with Melissa Ricks and Matt's fellow PBB Teen Olyn Maimban as his two love interests. Albert Martinez and Agot Isidro will have special participations as Pedro's parents.
Jerome Pobocan, Don Santos and Trina Dayrit will share the directorial chores.
Meanwhile, Matt's own story is one for a teleseries. He never got to see his father, an American Air Force man. His father met his mom in Japan, fell in love, and their brief romance produced a baby. And then, his father left for the States and never came back.
"Ang alam ko po nasa West Virginia," Matt replied when asked of his dad's whereabouts.
Is he planning to see him?
"Opo, kung may pagkakataon," he said with a smile, a constant expression.
But he added: "Gusto ko lang siyang makilala. Ano naman po, kuntento naman ako sa buhay ko. Andiyan naman ang mommy ko at mga kapatid ko."
He's not even shy to tell that he and his siblings belong to the "United Nations."
"Isang Japanese, isang Filipino, at ako, isang Amerikano."
Matt once worked in the ABS-CBN's art department. He was in the group who made props, built them, painted them, took care of them. Now, he's doing a big production which should need lavish props, backdrops and the works but he won't be doing them anymore, as he will be in front of the camera as the lead star.
"Hindi nga po ako makapaniwala. Nung sinabi sa akin ni Sir Deo (Endrinal, unit head, ABS-CBN) na ako raw ang bagong Pedro Penduko, parang natulala ako," he said.
The quantum leap would not change him as a person. That's his promise. Although he said, the new job has given him a lot of opportunities, and a chance to buy a new DVD player. "Opo," he laughed, "nakabili na po ako. Pero mumurahin lang po."
At the PBB house, he said one of his dreams was to buy for himself a DVD player. In fact, a part of his winnings is an entertainment showcase from Promac. Sadly, the showcase which include a DVD player has not been delivered to him until now. So with his earnings as a new star, he's now able to buy things he really wants, including a DVD player. Other things he now owns are a guitar and a drum set. Actually, he now has a band named Cherokee, and he wants to convert an empty room in their house as a band room. Matt sings, plays drums, guitar, except for the piano. "Pag-aaralan pa po."
Back to Pedro Penduko: it was once played by Ramon Zamora in a film by Celso Ad Castillo in the mid-70s, then by Janno Gibbs, directed by Erik Matti in the early 90s.
He has to learn wushu and other martial arts for the series. What is the story of the new Pedro Penduko?
"Isa po akong batang lumaki sa lola, duwag po ako dito, laging binubugbog ng mga kaklase. Magaling lang po akong magkuwento. At dun ako nagpapabida sa mga tao.
Lumaki po ako nang hindi nakikilala ang mga magulang ko, pero nang nalaman ko na dinukot ang tatay ko nung mga bad engkantos, nagka-misyon akong mabawi yung tatay ko. Tapos, bigla na lang magkakatotoo yung mga kuwento ko nang hindi sinasadya."
About his veteran co-stars and directors:
"Tinutulungan po nila ako. Napaka-supportive po sila sa akin. Pagka meron pong eksenang medyo hindi ko ma-pickup, andyan po sila. Sinasabi nila, "Ito yung emotion mo, ito yung dapat gawin mo.Medyo naninibago po ako noong una, pero ngayon, ma-okey-okey na. Malaking tulong rin po ang mga directors namin." His love team with Melissa Ricks:
"Noong una, parang naiilang ako, kasi siyempre, wow, si Melissa Ricks na siya, sikat na siya, tapos, ila-love team sa akin. Pero po pinag-workshop po nila kami, kaya andun na po yung bonding namin."
His relationship with Olyn:
"Kami naman po ni Olyn, doon pa lang sa bahay ni Big Brother, close na kami. Kaya wala na pong acting block sa amin. Nagku-kuwentuhan po kami minsan. Dati, naglalakad-lakad lang kami sa gilid ng ABS-CBN, ngayon hindi na pwede! Parang, eto na!"
