Pinoy Dream Academy

ABS-CBN is indeed in a franchising-spree of foreign reality-based shows. The latest addition, after the phenomenal Big Brother and Deal or No Deal, is a singing contest with a twist. Housed inside a Pinoy Big Brother-style academy with cameras watching the 'students' 24/7, these students undergo a rigid training program geared to harness their overall packaging as a singing sensation. The show will last for four months. Sixteen students will start the show, and every week, one student will be eliminated until on the last week of the academy, three finalists will remain.

Some are saying that this is ABS-CBN's answer to ABC's franchising of Philippine Idol. Na takot daw ang ABS-CBN sa maaring mangyari kung mag-hit ang Philippine Idol at hindi ito napaghandaan ang naturang scenario.

Is franchising a tried and tested foreign show ultimately create a stable schedule for a TV network? This remains to be seen. For now, let us just say that the phenomenal success of Pinoy Big Brother, and to a lesser degree, the success of Kapamilya Deal or No Deal is an indication that franchising a foreign show is the 'in' thing these days.

Now, let us see how GMA is strategizing itself in the battle of franchised shows. In an interview with Wilma Galvante, sinabi nito na di na nila kailangan pang mag-franchise ng isang foreign show para mag-click ang palabas na ito dito sa Pilipinas. Starstruck, according to this lady executive of the Kapuso network, remains to be their ultimate reality artista search, and this brand has always been the preferred choice of viewers for its past three seasons. With the coming of Philippine Idol, Pinoy Dream Academy and Pinoy Big Brother Season 2, GMA is rolling a new season of Starstruck.
