That Rotunda Called Fuente Osmeña
Cebu will never be Cebu without that circular rotunda called Fuente Osmeña. Before the boom of the malls in the North Reclamation Area for SM City Cebu and the Ayala Center Cebu in Lahug, the Fuente Osmeña Circle is the place to be. Standing gloriously around the circle are some of Cebu’s legacy establishments like Robinsons and Midtown Hotel, Elegant Circle Inn, Rosita’s, and Rajah Park Hotel.
In the middle of the circle is a monument within a beautiful fountain. The whole area connects downtown Cebu City with the uptown part of the metropolis. Around this monument is a skating rink enclosed in a metal fence. During the Sinulog festivities, this area becomes a smorgasbord of activities, people and stalls offering different food. Every year, a giant Christmas tree is erected inside the circle to celebrate Christmas season, and ushers the Sinulog festivities.
Often called the "Queen City of the South" and the Seat of Christianity in the Philippines and the reason for the Sinulog celebration, Cebu is the country's oldest city. Exploring Cebu City, one encounters a rich historic past. Cebuanos are extremely proud of their cultural and historical heritage, a legacy which has endured thru the centuries from the time the great explorer Ferdinand Magellan first planted the cross on Cebu's shore.
