Housemate Sam Milby

At 21, not so tall, but handsome and engaging Sam Lloyd Milby is a prized catch for ABS-CBN and Star Cinema -- probably the only genuine showbiz find in the first edition of Pinoy Big Brother last year.

One of those who stayed least in Bahay ni Kuya of the PBB, he has managed to capture the imagination of initial fans and even the big bosses of the TV network and Star Cinema.

The No. 13 spells luck for Sam who is the 13th housemate to enter Bahay ni Kuya but he is the first housemate to have tangible projects for his talents.

While the PBB favorites are now content with waving to fans in malls all over the country -- where even Whitney Tyson and Dagul could wow crowds -- and acting like zombies and duwedes in so-so episodes, here is Sam proving to be a singer-recording artist as well as a charming, talented actor in his first movie.

Yes, while Uma Barum Khouny steals scenes from his fellow PBB actors and stars to be "money conscious" about the talent fees he is getting for every "outing" (no charity shows for him talaga), Sam Milby -- the last PBB housemate to enter Bahay ni Kuya last year is the first PBB talent to do his first music. Not only that -- but also to do his first movie, a star in it.

What can the lesser talent-endowed among the PBB batch say but this: Sam’s success is also our success. Right, JB?

After 45 days that ABS-CBN’s Pinoy Big Brother had ended, here’s Sam Milby with his self-titled album for Star Records, which sees in him "a sure rock star and potential recording artist".

And right now, he is in Dumaguete City together with stars John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo filming his first movie (and John Lloyd and Bea’s third), Close To You.

Did I hear right from film director Cathy Garcia-Molina and scriptwriter Mel del Rosario that they have still some scenes to be filmed in Singapore, even if the playdate of the movie is only 20 days away (Feb. 15)?

Close To You which Star Cinema produces with the Close Up bosses, stars John Lloyd Cruz as Manuel and Bea Alonso as Marian, childhood friends. Marian’s long time love has always been Lance (Sam Milby) who migrated to the US. Ten years later, Lance is a lead singer of a popular rock band Orion.

Now the Orion band comes to the Philippines on a tour. What happens?

In Sam’s debut music album, Close To You is the first single and this song is being used in the Close-Up commercial and the title of Sam’s first movie. It has 8 songs and 7 minus ones with his own composition, Magmahal Muli.

Stardom and fame didn’t come to Sam Milby of Dayton, Ohio in his mom Elsie Lacia’s country -- she comes from Surigao del Sur -- overnight.

In his past visit here sometime in 2003, he already submitted a CD of songs to Boy Abunda. Nothing came out of it.

Then last March 2005, he came again on vacation with his mom Elsie and sister Ada (now with the US Army in Iraq). Talent scout-manager Erick Raymundo who is from Pasig spotted him in the malls.

After joining some shows, Sam got a supporting role commercial, Emperador and later Jollibee. The Close Up commercial was a major splash before he joined PBB.

After two tragic loves in the US, he has no girl. Yet. More about Sam next time.
